Understanding the Pressure Performance of Fomblin® PFPE Lubricants
One of the defining advantages of Fomblin® PFPE lubricants is their ability to maintain stable lubrication performance under significant mechanical loads. While many conventional lubricants may lose effectiveness, degrade, or experience film breakdown under pressure, PFPE-based fluids retain their protective properties and continue to safeguard critical components.
As pressure increases, Fomblin® PFPE lubricants experience a controlled rise in viscosity while exhibiting only minimal compressibility. This characteristic supports the formation of a strong and durable lubricating film capable of protecting contact surfaces under demanding operating conditions.
However, pressure-viscosity behavior varies among different Fomblin® product families. Fomblin® Y fluids, for example, demonstrate a more significant increase in viscosity under pressure compared to Fomblin® Z fluids. This distinction is largely attributed to differences in molecular architecture, particularly the presence of bulky –CF₃ side groups along the molecular chain of Fomblin® Y products.
These molecular features influence how lubricant molecules respond to applied pressure, creating unique rheological characteristics that can provide performance advantages in specific applications. By understanding these differences, engineers can the most suitable PFPE lubricant to optimize equipment reliability and operating efficiency.
Pressure-viscosity evaluations conducted at 30°C across a pressure range of 3–10 MPa compared Fomblin® Y and Fomblin® Z fluids with similar viscosities of approximately 250 cSt at 20°C (68°F). The results revealed a notably stronger pressure-viscosity response in Fomblin® Y fluids, demonstrating how molecular structure directly impacts lubricant behavior and performance under load.
